Toltec Mounds – Plum Bayou Trail

Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park, a National Historic Landmark, is the home of the largest surviving prehistoric mounds in Arkansas. The park is about 15 miles southeast of North Little Rock.

The mounds were used by the ancestors of Native Americans from about 600 to 1150 A.D.

The park also has two walking trails. The Knapp Trail is a paved loop path that is a little less than 1 mile.

The Plum Bayou Trail is a mostly unpaved 1.7-mile figure-eight loop. The last 1/3 of it overlaps the paved Knapp Trail.

Fort Smith – Ben Geren Bike Trail

The Ben Geren Bike Trail is a nice walking path. This paved path in Fort Smith, Arkansas, is 1.9 miles long (each way) and connects Ben Geren Park to the nearby Chaffee Crossing area.

Benton – Sunset Lake Park Walking Path

Sunset Lake Park Walking Path

Having grown up in Benton, I was excited to hear that there are a couple walking paths there now. The longest one is at Sunset Lake Park, a fairly new park in Benton.

The Sunset Lake Park walking path is an easy one-mile loop that circles the triangular-shaped lake. Despite the noise from Interstate-30 next door, this is a pleasant walk and something that definitely enhances the city’s quality of life.

Mount Magazine – Benefield West Loop

The Benefield West Loop trail at Mount Magazine State Park is an easy .9-mile loop. It is almost completely flat and about half of it is on old forest roads.

This is not a scenic-view trail, at least during leaf-on (summer, early fall, late spring). But you should take a minute to look at the pond.

Fort Smith – Creekmore Park Walking Trail

Creekmore Park is one of the most popular parks in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The park features a half-mile walking path that loops around the park. For those in Fort Smith, walking the path in Creekmore Park is a very pleasant way to get some exercise without having to leave the city.
