My girlfriend thought I was crazy for wanting to hike Sunday. Here in western Arkansas, there was snow everywhere (and still coming down), and it was breezy with temps in the low 30′s.

But I had really been wanting to do some more hiking on the Ouachita Trail, and the roads weren’t bad. So I went anyway.

Ouachita Trail 05-CD – Blowout Mountain

View from Blowout Mountain, Montgomery Cty., Ark.

Today, my friend David and I hiked what I have labeled segments 05-C and 05-D of the Ouachita Trail.

Ouachita Trail Near Summit of Blowout Mountain

This is a 5-mile segment of the trail that starts just a few miles east of Big Brushy Campground and extends across Blowout Mountain and the Blowout Mountain Scenic Area. It begins at Forest Road 33 and ends at Forest Road 274.

There are no designated parking areas so we each parked along the side of the forest road with a note indicating that we were hiking on the trail.

Ouachita Trail on Rich Mtn. Between Highway 88 and 270/59

Yesterday on New Year’s Eve, I hiked what I have labeled as segments 03-C and 03-D of the Ouachita Trail. This is a 2.6 mile section that extends from Highway 88 (of the Talimena Scenic Drive) near Queen Wilhelmina State Park towards the East to a trailhead (with parking) on Highway 270.

I started at the Highway 270 trailhead.

Ouachita Trail 03-AB – Queen Wilhelmina to Hwy 88

Saturday, I hiked what I have labeled as segments 03-A and 03-B of the Ouachita Trail. This is a 2.5 mile section that begins at Queen Wilhelmina State Park and continues East until it intersects with Highway 88 (of the Talimena Scenic Drive). The first half-mile or so it is the same as the State Park’s Lover’s Leap Trail.

It’s not that difficult a trail segment overall. There is some up and down climbing, but there are also long stretches on a relatively level ridge.

As you would expect, the trail has some great views from Rich Mountain.
